Gotthard road tunnel

Gotthard Massif | Switzerland

The construction project

The Gotthard Road Tunnel, completed in 1980, is showing its age and requires extensive renovation. To maintain the important north-south transport connection through the Swiss Alps during the renovation work, the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) is building a second tunnel tube, which is expected to be operational from 2030.

After the new tube is completed, the first (old) tunnel tube will be repaired. Both tubes will then be available for traffic from 2033. One of the prerequisites for the expansion was the relocation of the access to the escape and rescue tunnel.

Product-specific requirements for doors:

  • Fire protection classes EI2 30 | EI2 90, T30 | T90
  • Wind load / pressure load 1,1 kPa
  • Smoke protection EN 1634-3

Technical data:

  • Start of construction: Spring 2021
  • Commissioning: expected in 2030
  • Construction company: Federal Roads Office ASTRA

Hodapp Tunnel swing gate (HTD-2) with integrated wicket door:

The Hodapp Tunnel swing gates (HTD-2) are used as lock gates in the access area of the pressurized escape and rescue tunnel. In the event of a fire, the gate must be able to withstand external influences such as heat and smoke in order to prevent the fire from spreading.

In emergencies, the gates must be able to be opened quickly and easily so that a rapid evacuation can take place. The integrated wicket door can be easily opened in an emergency, provided the required pressure equalization is maintained via the pressure equalization flap, and is used to allow people to pass through during daytime operations.

In dangerous situations, people can leave the tunnel tube along the marked escape routes through fire-resistant sliding doors into the escape and rescue route tunnel in order to be evacuated in an orderly manner via the lock.

These Hodapp Tunnel swing gates show the access to the rescue tunnel on the north side of the Gotthard road tunnel. On the left you can see the single-leaf, fully automated lock access gate with a personnel door.

On the right side is the single-leaf access gate to the operations center (without drive technology). Both pedestrian doors are equipped with an access control system. The integration into the facade is particularly noteworthy, so that one can certainly speak of optimal architectural integration here.
